Why It’s Better To Blow Your Nose One Nostril At A Time

THE SAFEST WAY TO BLOW YOUR NOSE Gently! Use one finger to press one nostril closed and breathe out through the other nostril. Then repeat on the other nostril. Opening your mouth slightly and closing your eyes releases pressure from your face and can make it easier to blow. I can attest that this method works quite well to clear the nose.

This is much safer than double nostril honking blowing, which generates enough pressure to send as much as a teaspoon of mucus up into the sinuses each time you do it, making your sinuses even more congested than they already were. Double nostril blowing also tends to drive viruses, bacteria and inflammatory mediators from the nostrils up into the sinuses, possibly causing a sinus infection. And double nostril blowing generates enough pressure to trigger a hemorrhagic stroke! (Gonzalez, 2014) Here are complete instructions for how to blow your nose using this one-nostril-at-a- time method.
